Nice bike trips from the Heerenhuys Ruinerwold are abundant, for instance to the scenic areas Dwingelderveld and Reestdal. The brink villages Havelte and Ruinen are very typical for the area, and so is the town of Meppel. The largest megalithic tomb in the Netherlands is in Borger, iaccompanied by thirteen other megalithhic graves. In the megaliths centre in Borger, fun and interesting information about those 5000 years old burial vaults can be obtained. Water lovers can go to the nearby national parks Weerribben or Wieden.
